How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

mechanic fixing tire

Rotating the tires on your vehicle represents an often-overlooked aspect of vehicle maintenance. Yet, it’s vital maintenance, relatively easy to do, that can save you lots of money on preventable repairs later on. How often should you rotate your tires? The answer depends on your vehicle’s mileage as you drive around Provo or West Valley City. You should also check your owner’s manual.

Discover more details about when to rotate tires thanks to our comprehensive guide from the service team at Prestman Auto in Salt Lake City. We want you to get the most out of owning your vehicle! Your vehicle will be safer and you will save money on vehicle ownership over time.

How Often Should We Rotate Tires?

Our service team highly recommends rotating tires every 5,000 to 8,00 miles. That’s roughly every four to six months of driving at 1,300 miles per month. But you need to understand that your actual situation will vary. Examine your owner’s manual or driver information center on your vehicle’s touchscreen for more details. You might even own a vehicle that reminds you it’s time for a tire rotation through the information screen or a dedicated app on your phone!

Tire rotation intervals depend on how many miles you drive, what conditions you drive in, and the current wear on your tires. Every time you bring your car in for service to Prestman Auto, we’ll inspect the tires to give you an idea of when you should rotate the tires. Of course, harsh UT winters can cause your tires to wear out more quickly than in ideal road conditions.

How Many Miles to Rotate Tires: FWD & RWD Vehicles

Front-wheel drive (FWD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles have one major difference: where the engine sends its power. The engine sends power to the front axle on FWD vehicles, while RWD vehicles send power to the rear axle. As such, you’ll need to rotate tires in a certain pattern based on the drivetrain of your vehicle. We’ll get into AWD vehicles later.

Whichever pair of tires receive the power will wear out faster than the non-drive wheels. That’s why tire rotation is vital to the longevity of your tires. It creates a balanced rate of wear across all four tires, extending the life of your tires while improving handling.

Here are a few tire rotation tips for FWD and RWD vehicles:

  • How often should you rotate your tires? Every 5,000 to 8,000 miles is when to rotate tires on FWD or RWD vehicles. Again, check your owner’s manual to confirm this because it could change based on your make, model, or year.
  • Rotating tires on your own in the garage or driveway? You should flip sides when you move the rear tires to the front on a FWD vehicle. The right rear tire should go to the front left. When you move the front tires to the rear, however, they should stay on the same side. So the right-front tire goes to the right rear for a FWD vehicle. Over the course of four tire rotations, each tire will be on each wheel at least once with this process.
  • When you rotate the tires on a RWD vehicle, invert the process we just showed you. When you move the front tires to the back, they should go on opposite sides (the right front to the left rear). But when you move the rear tires up front, they can stay on the same side (the back left to the front left). This will even out the tire wear as much as possible over the entire life of the tires, which can be around 50,000 miles under good conditions.
  • Do you frequently go off-roading or fulfill your need for speed at a racetrack? How many miles to rotate tires will become more frequent because these activities cause more tire wear than normal driving on Salt Lake City roads. For advice based on your driving habits and your unique situation, contact the service team at Prestman Auto or call 385-376-1576. We’ll keep an eye on tire wear with every service appointment when you bring your vehicle into our service center. If it’s time, we’ll rotate the tires for you for convenience.

How Many Miles to Rotate Tires: AWD Vehicles

How often should you rotate your tires? Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles is when to rotate tires for an AWD vehicle. That’s because an AWD vehicle sends power to all four wheels when road conditions are less than ideal. Again, this is just a general rule. For more specific information, look at your vehicle’s owner’s manual. We highly recommend AWD vehicles for harsh UT winters when there’s a lot of snow and slick road conditions, so you should rotate your tires no less than 5,000 miles.

Importance of Rotations

Regular tire rotations give you many significant benefits. First and foremost, they can keep your vehicle safer. You’ll get better handling because of even tread wear, which can save your life and the lives of your family and other motorists by keeping your vehicle on the road more efficiently.

Financially, tire rotations extend the life of your tires, getting you more out of your investment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Rotating tires saves you money in the long run because you’ll need new tires less often. Some service centers offer free tire rotations, while others will charge a nominal fee, perhaps around $50.

Other benefits of tire rotations include:

  • Improved handling and better road traction during all conditions.
  • Lowered stress on your car’s drivetrain due to optimal rolling resistance.
  • Better fuel efficiency from better handling on the road.
  • Less road noise to hear inside the cabin.
  • Improved safety for your vehicle while keeping other motorists safe.

It doesn’t matter what types of tires you own, from high-performance tires to off-road varieties and all-weather tires. All kinds of tires should be rotated regularly for best results and even safety.
